May 3, 2009
marks the Centennial Anniversary of Margate City. To
commemorate this milestone a committee has been formed
to plan a year of projects and events to honor Margate’s
rich history and to educate and involve the businesses
and residents of our town.
Known as Sand Hill Beach and later named South Atlantic
City, Margate City was reincorporated with her name on
April 20, 1909 and became official during the city’s
meeting on May 3, 1909. She was named to honor the English
seaport and summer resort in Kent on the North Sea.
Over the past 100 years Margate has become known for her
beautiful beaches, outstanding restaurants and unique shopping.
Of course it was a six-story, 90-ton elephant named Lucy
that put Margate on the map.
Be sure to check back frequently for updates to our event
listings. We hope you’ll mark your calendars to join
us in the celebration.
